Here at Colgate we know a good mattress not only means a cozy snooze for your baby, but also great support for their growing little bones. If you are just embarking on the crib mattress search, the first rule is the firmer the better. Soft sleeping surfaces for infants not only increase chance of suffocation, but is an often mentioned risk factor for SIDS.

After reading through our personal Buyer’s Guide, the first step is to determine if you want to lay your little one’s head on an innerspring or foam mattress. Check out the difference here:

Foam: Generally the lightest option and available in a variety of thickness, usually between 3 and 6 inches. Foam mattresses are high in density, about 1.5 pounds per cubic foot. An average foam mattress weights anywhere from 7 to 8 pounds. We usually don’t like to brag, but… Our foam mattresses have been rated #1 by leading consumer publications for over 15 years!

Innerspring: May be a bit more durable than foam, innerspring mattress quality depends on the gauge of the wire and the number of turns per coil. The more layers, the better. The higher quality of these layers, the better the mattress!

Organic: Usually wool, these come in both innerspring and foam options. Natural, organic, green or eco-friendly, whatever you call it, just remember- the firmer the better!

Once the construction type has been decided, review these other 4 factors to ensure your child is getting the best sleep possible!

Is it the right size? The mattress needs to fit snugly in the crib.

Is it firm? Too soft a surface can create suffocation and increase SIDS hazards. The firmer, the better!

Is the ticking (mattress cover) sturdy? For water resistance, look for double or triple laminated ticking reinforcement. Check out our Wee-A-Way and Natural Wee-A-Way Mattress Pad Cover- both waterproof, fits all standard size crib mattresses, and easy to clean!

Is it certified? Crib mattresses must meet safety standards defined by the CPSC and the American Society for Testing and Materials. Don’t forget, all of our Colgate mattresses are Greenguard certified regardless of model.

There you have it, a brief overview of crib mattress options. Don’t forget, here at Colgate we pledge to comfort parents by providing factual and relevant information so you can feel confident knowing your baby is going to get the best sleep possible. Of course, the buying process can be stressful, so please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.

It all started over half a century ago with nothing more than a $1,500 loan and Sol and Anne Wolkin’s drive to follow their passion. Today, we are so proud to stand behind some of the top innovations and trends that we have pioneered in the crib mattress industry!

The reunion of Anne and Sol, after writing letters to each other during his service in the Air Force, was a sweet one. On that day they decided they couldn’t spend another day apart. So they married, and never had to separate again. At the time, Sol was working diligently at a coat-making company, but had a burning desire to run his own business.

Hello, Colgate Mattress! Sol’s best friend’s father had opened the original Colgate Mattress factory, located on Colgate Street, in New York. The families decided to take the leap into entrepreneurship with Sol and Ben, the founder’s son, opening their own Colgate Mattress Atlanta Corp. to manufacture crib mattresses. Growing from their first factory of 4,000 square feet, Colgate currently resides in a 60,000 square foot manufacturing and office plant in historic Cabbagetown, Georgia, an eclectic, quaint neighborhood in Atlanta.

Anne, Sol and Ben founded Colgate Mattress on the values of integrity, loyalty and honesty. These core principals have been passed through the generations to today’s family members and managers of Colgate Mattresses.

With a strong heritage and history in the crib mattress making business, Colgate has also been a pioneer in many of the new developments in the industry. Many of the components and features that we take for granted today, were designed and introduced by the Wolkin family.

Here are a few of the many trends, products, styles and features that Colgate has pioneered over the past 50 years!

We were the first to…

1. Make all-foam crib mattresses.

2. Use coir fiber as an insulator, which prevents the softer cushioning layers from sinking into the coils in an innerspring mattress. Coir is the highest quality insulator available. It is made from coconut-husks and, although expensive, is the most natural insulator on the market. Colgate Mattress was green before anyone knew what green was!

3. Use natural cotton batting as a cushioning layer, more specifically a top cushioning layer- not as a bottom cushioning like most other brands!

4. Offer dual firmness in a crib mattress.

5. Use the “hot” and popular viscoelastic memory foam in a crib mattress.

6. Use 5-ply vinyl crib mattress cover- Triple laminated and quilted.

7. Use wet-proof cloth covers on crib mattresses- Elegant and essential.

8. Develop a durability tester you can trust.

Today, Colgate Mattress is still known for their integrity and production of the highest quality, most durable mattresses. Their heritage, combined with their innovation and dedication to producing the most protective mattresses for babies and infants is admired throughout the industry. They would never sell a mattress that they wouldn’t be proud and secure to put their own babies on.

Much money is to be made on the manufacturing of adult mattresses. However, Colgate Mattress believes that a company should focus on its core competency. To this point, Colgate Mattress only makes baby and infant mattresses and accessories – ensuring that the crib mattress specialists remain that way.

Recently there have been some news reports (television, newspaper, internet blogs) regarding the use of certain flame retardant chemicals in baby and children’s products. These chemical agents have been used as a flame retardant in foam.

Some of the chemical agents mentioned in these news articles are chlorinated Tris, Penta-BDE (aka PBDE) and TCEP. These agents have been suspected of causing cancer.

We at Colgate Mattress Atlanta want to assure you, our customers, that we have never used any of these chemical agents in the manufacture of our crib mattresses.

When the State of California passed TB603, which required mattresses of all types to pass an “open flame” test, Colgate Mattress Atlanta complied with this regulation by adding a barrier fabric (rayon) to our polyurethane foam mattresses. We did not use FR (fire retardant) agents to comply with this regulation.

In 2007 when the Federal Flammability standard (16CFR 1633) was enacted, which was an even more stringent “open flame” standard than California’s TB603, we had to change nothing. Our fire barrier easily passed the new and tougher standard.

We produce our mattresses in the United States and use independent third party testing labs to ensure health and safety. Further, all of our products are Greenguard Certified for children and schools, and we use Certi-pur certified foam.

Colgate Mattress Atlanta is a family owned business. Our founder, Solomon Wolkin, put his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren on the same mattresses that we produce for you, our customers. Our products are made with premium quality materials by dedicated employees. Your baby’s health and safety is our priority.

At Colgate we take the role of protecting our environment for future generations very serious. Colgate strives to reduce its environmental load and wants to share with you what Colgate is doing to protect the environment for future generations.

Reducing use of paper and wood based goods: Colgate has been able to reduce its waste by 33% by using our internal recycling and recovery program, re-using pallets, returning wood and containers back to their original suppliers, changing our labeling procedures so that they require less materials, and emailing invoices instead of mailing paper invoices.

Reducing Fuel Consumption: Colgate ships most of its mattresses to stores and customers by using commercial trucks. We are reducing the amount of fuel consumed in the shipping of our products by using more full trailers, using more efficient loading procedures, and receiving as many full trailer loads of raw materials as possible.

Increasing our use of environmentally friendly raw materials: Colgate has increased its use of organic and natural materials, recycled paper, and a natural progression of changing lights to more efficient bulbs. Check out of progressive line of environmentally friendly products at http://colgatekids.com/?product_category=organic-mattresses. Colgate has also begun the process of researching into the future use of solar panels.

Colgate takes our commitment to the environment very serious. Colgate is also in the beginning phases of implementing a zero waste policy and other programs. Thanks for reading!

What to do when you are done with your crib mattress? We have received numerous calls on where you can recycle your crib mattress. Currently recycling facilities do not accept crib mattresses, but we have suggestions below on how you can donate, reuse or repurpose your crib mattress.

1. Donate your baby crib mattress to a shelter. Contact a local shelter to determine if they are accepting baby crib mattress donations. Colgate supports many women’s shelters with generous donations of crib mattresses to make sure that all babies have a safe place to sleep. If you know a shelter that needs baby mattresses, please send us their information.
2. Donate your mattress to local furniture banks where people in need can gather good, used products for their home. Colgate can help to direct you to your local furniture bank. Some cities have them, some do not have furniture banks.
3. Sell the mattress components to a recycler. You can actually sell the steel from Colgate innerspring mattresses to a local recycler. Colgate uses top quality American steel for the innerspring portion of the crib mattress.
4. Reuse the Coir Fiber in your garden, underneath your pet’s doghouse, as a welcome mat (good conversation starter) or even under your car to keep your garage dry!
5. Repurpose the cover as a weed protector in your garden or under the arts and crafts table to keep floor clean.
6. Repurpose the mattress as a backstop for sports (great for preventing baseballs from dinging your house or bruised noses from run-ins with basketball poles) .
7. Reuse the mattress as a doggie bed with your dog’s favorite blanket. Great option for getting Fido out of your bed or off the couch!
8. Store your mattress in your storm shelter or basement to use as head coverage if you live in a tornado prone area. CDC (The Center for Disease Control) recommends protecting your head during a tornado with household objects such as mattresses and blankets (http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/tornadoes/during.asp)

Colgate takes pride in the products we manufacture. Once your children have outgrown their baby mattress consider donating, reusing, or repurposing instead of sending it to a landfill. Colgate encourages donations to your local womens shelter or furniture bank. Donating your crib mattress is acceptable everywhere. The best way to protect the environment is to use a product more than once in its lifetime; set a great example for your children!

Eco-friendly: Organic, Natural, or Green

Over the past several years, there has been an increasing consumer trend for products that are environmentally friendly. As a result, many companies are developing eco-friendly products. The crib mattress industry is no exception.

Colgate Mattress Atlanta Corporation has been using natural products (coconut fiber and cotton) in our crib mattresses long before it became a trend. As technology improves, we continue to incorporate more eco-friendly products into our mattresses. Our philosophy is simple: It’s what’s on the inside that counts.

Unfortunately, there are no industry-wide standards regarding the use of the terms “organic,” “natural,” and “green” that apply consistently across non-food related consumer products. Because of this lack of standards, it is up to the company to determine if their product is “organic,” “natural,” or “green”.

At Colgate we choose to label all of our natural products as “Environmentally Friendlier.” We want to be transparent with our customers and put a mommy’s mind at ease with our honesty about eco-friendly products; we choose how we label our mattresses cautiously.

Additionally, all of Colgate’s products are GREENGUARD Certified and all of our foam mattresses are CertiPUR Certified. GREENGUARD Certified products must meet stringent chemical emission requirements. The CertiPUR-US® program is a voluntary testing, analysis and certification program for flexible polyurethane foam. We use this third-party certification to ensure that our products address the unique sensitivities of children.

Colgate uses only the highest quality materials in our mattresses. At Colgate, we want you to rest easy by knowing what is inside your baby’s mattress. Make sure the crib mattress company you choose is transparent with what is inside their mattress.

If you ever any questions concerning your crib mattress or which crib mattress to choose, please do not hesistate to directly call us at 404-681-2121 or research our website. Thank you for reading

The crib mattress is more important to your baby than your mattress is to you.
Remember the terrible mattress you slept on that night at the hotel, or maybe it was a friend’s house? Maybe it was a few nights. How did your back feel? Now, think of baby sleeping on a mattress up to 70% of the time for the next few years and not able to tell you their mattress is terrible. Also, babies need more support than adults because a baby’s bones are softer and growing faster than at any other time of their life. They will grow to more than 50% of their adult size while sleeping on their mattress.

That’s the big deal about crib mattresses

There is a lot of incorrect information out there about crib mattresses, some even generated by other manufacturers trying to convenience you to buy their mattresses. At Colgate, we believe that if you have correct information about what is important in a crib mattress, and if you can recognize quality in a crib mattress then, you will prefer a Colgate mattress.

While you learn about and shop for a crib mattress keep this in mind – the three most important features of any type of crib mattress, in order of most important feature first are: support (the greater the firmness, the better), comfort (this means cushioning without taking away from firmness), and convenience (and preference for the parents).

Mommy Katie has a nice review up of our crib mattress pad on her preparing for baby guide:

With my son, I learned that diapers do not always last as long as you might intend them to. I hated getting him from his crib to find that he soaked through his diaper and got his sheets and bedding completely wet, not to mention that he would be soaking wet too. My daughter was not the same, it was rare that she would leak out of her diapers, so when my son became notorious for leaky messes I learned that having a pad cover on the mattress was essential. That being said, this time around I will be prepared. Recently I was sent the perfect mattress pad that is exactly what we will be needing for the new baby! I was sent a Organic Cotton EcoCover Crib Mattress Cover from Colgate Kids! I love that this is a organic mattress cover which is great for using for a new baby.
