Motherhood: If I Only Knew Then, What I Know Now

Motherhood is a wonderful journey filled with beautiful moments, celebrations and milestones. It is also filled with anxiety, worry and, at times, even fear. For some it is a chance to relive their childhood and be a kid again. For others, it is a struggle to stay organized and prepared for all that parenthood throws at us.

It’s truly one of the hardest jobs out there. There are no owner manuals for raising kids. There are no “Cliff Notes” for parenting. A lot of it is going with your gut and flying by the seat of your pants.

Every mother looks back at some point in time and says to herself, “If I only knew then, what I know now!” So we decided to ask a few mothers to reflect on that question and share a piece of advice they would give to themselves about motherhood.

Here’s what they had to say:

Amy D {29} – 1 child {9 months}

Have lots very comfortable underwear ready for when you get back from the hospital! If you choose to nurse, your nipples will heal (with the help of a little lanolin and breast milk). Take advantage and enjoy the time before they can crawl. I would also have started her on solids earlier since that is when she started sleeping through the night.

Sarah {36}  – 1 adopted child {2 years old}

Relax. “Good things come to those who wait”

KP {41} – 1 child {18 months}

Stop stressing. Follow your gut. There is no one way. Every baby is different. And yours is yours!

Ashley {44} – 2 children {19 & 16}

You can’t take all the blame for the “bad/hard stuff” or all the credit for the “good stuff.” Embrace them for their uniqueness.

Angie {43} – 1 Daughter {9 years old}

Allow your children to ask tough questions at a young age and answer them simply. The questions that we as adults feel are too hard for a child can be addressed with simple to the point response. Leaving the emotion out of the response.  This allows the child to process and feel understood at a young age. Building self-confidence and allowing a child to move past the question and go back to life as they know at those young ages.

Tess {45} – 4 children {17, 15, 13, 7}

No matter how much you think you are prepared, you’re really not. Accept you can’t be in total control.

Karen {55} – 2 children {26 & 22}

“If at first you don’t succeed, lower your standards.” It is the motto I live by to maintain my sanity.

Terry {68} – 2 children {45 & 42}

Don’t save all the stuff you think will be important to your kids when they are grown. Except photos.

Bonnie {69} – 2 children [44 & 41]

Spend as much time as your can with your kids….the laundry can wait.

Grandma Shirley {95} – 6 kids, 12 grandkids and a whole bunch of great grandkids

Keep your sense of humor!

One last piece of advice…..

Don’t skimp on a crib mattress. It’s as important a decision as choosing a car seat!

……..OK we admit that was a shameless plug by our own Aunt Mimi. But she’s right!

Happy Mother’s Day
