Reducing Colgate’s Environmental Footprint for Crib Mattresses

We are in the baby business, which means we are in the business of protecting future generations. At Colgate we take the role of protecting our environment for future generations very serious. Colgate strives to reduce its environmental load and wants to share with you what Colgate is doing to protect the environment for future generations.

  1. Reducing use of paper and wood based goods: Colgate has been able to reduce its waste by 33% by using our internal recycling and recovery program, re-using pallets, returning wood and containers back to their original suppliers, changing our labeling procedures so that they require less materials, and emailing invoices instead of mailing paper invoices.
  2. Reducing Fuel Consumption: Colgate ships most of its mattresses to stores and customers by using commercial trucks. We are reducing the amount of fuel consumed in the shipping of our products by using more full trailers, using more efficient loading procedures, and receiving as many full trailer loads of raw materials as possible.
  3. Increasing our use of environmentally friendly raw materials: Colgate has increased its use of organic and natural materials, recycled paper, and a natural progression of changing lights to more efficient bulbs. Check out our progressive line of environmentally friendly crib mattresses. Colgate has also begun the process of researching into the future use of solar panels.

Colgate takes our commitment to the environment very serious. Colgate is also in the beginning phases of implementing a zero waste policy and other programs. Thanks for reading!

What do you do when you are done with your Crib Mattress?

What can you do when you are done with your crib mattress?

We get calls regularly from customers asking where to recycle a used crib mattress.

Currently recycling facilities do not accept crib mattresses, but we have colgate stores bannera few suggestions below on how you can donate, reuse or repurpose your crib mattress.

1. Donate your used crib mattress to a shelter. Contact a local shelter to determine if they are accepting baby crib mattress donations. Colgate supports many women’s shelters with generous donations of crib mattresses to make sure that all babies have a safe place to sleep. If you know a shelter that needs baby mattresses, please send us their information.

2. Donate your crib mattress to local furniture banks where people in need can gather good, used products for their home. Colgate can help to direct you to your local furniture bank. Some cities have them, some do not have furniture banks.

3. Sell the crib mattress components to a recycler. You can actually sell the steel from Colgate innerspring mattresses to a local recycler. Colgate uses top quality American steel for the innerspring portion of the crib mattress.

4. Reuse the Coir Fiber in your garden, underneath your pet’s doghouse, as a welcome mat (good conversation starter) or even under your car to keep your garage dry!

5. Repurpose the cover as a weed protector in your garden or under the arts and crafts table to keep floor clean.

6. Repurpose the crib mattress as a backstop for sports (great for preventing baseballs from dinging your house or bruised noses from run-ins with basketball poles) .

7. Reuse the crib mattress as a doggie bed with your dog’s favorite blanket. Great option for getting Fido out of your bed or off the couch!

8. Store your crib mattress in your storm shelter or basement to use as head coverage if you live in a tornado prone area. CDC (The Center for Disease Control) recommends protecting your head during a tornado with household objects such as mattresses and blankets (http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/tornadoes/during.asp)

A Word from Colgate Mattress on Crib Mattress Donations

Colgate takes pride in the products we manufacture. Once your children have outgrown their baby mattress consider donating, reusing, or repurposing instead of sending it to a landfill. Colgate encourages donations to your local womens shelter or furniture bank. Donating your crib mattress is acceptable everywhere. The best way to protect the environment is to use a product more than once in its lifetime; set a great example for your children!

ECO-Friendly: Organic, Natural, or Green

Eco-friendly: Organic, Natural, or Green

Over the past several years, there has been an increasing consumer trend for products that are environmentally friendly.  As a result, many companies are developing eco-friendly products.  The crib mattress industry is no exception.   Colgate Mattress Atlanta Corporation has been using natural products (coconut fiber and cotton) in our crib mattresses long before it became a trend.  As technology improves, we continue to incorporate more eco-friendly products into our mattresses.  Our philosophy is simple: It’s what’s on the inside that counts.   Unfortunately, there are no industry-wide standards regarding the use of the terms “organic,” “natural,” and “green” that apply consistently across non-food related consumer products.  Because of this lack of standards, it is up to the company to determine if their product is “organic,” “natural,” or “green”.   At Colgate we choose to label all of our natural products as “Environmentally Friendlier.” We want to be transparent with our customers and put a mommy’s mind at ease with our honesty about eco-friendly products; we choose how we label our mattresses cautiously.     Additionally, all of Colgate’s products are GREENGUARD Certified and all of our foam mattresses are CertiPUR Certified. GREENGUARD Certified products must meet stringent chemical emission requirements. The CertiPUR-US® program is a voluntary testing, analysis and certification program for flexible polyurethane foam.  We use this third-party certification to ensure that our products address the unique sensitivities of children.   Colgate uses only the highest quality materials in our mattresses. At Colgate, we want you to rest easy by knowing what is inside your baby’s mattress. Make sure the crib mattress company you choose is transparent with what is inside their mattress. If you ever any questions concerning your crib mattress or which crib mattress to choose, please do not hesistate to directly call us at 404-681-2121 or research our website.

What is the big deal about crib mattresses?

The crib mattress is more important to your baby than your mattress is to you. Remember the terrible mattress you slept on that night at the hotel, or maybe it was a friend’s house? Maybe it was a few nights. How did your back feel?

Now, think of baby sleeping on a mattress up to 70% of the time for the next few years and not able to tell you their mattress is terrible. Also, babies need more support than adults because a baby’s bones are softer and growing faster than at any other time of their life. They will grow to more than 50% of their adult size while sleeping on their mattress. That’s the big deal about crib mattresses.

There is a lot of incorrect information out there about crib mattresses, some even generated by other manufacturers trying to convince you to buy their mattresses. At Colgate, we believe that if you have correct information about what is important in a crib mattress, and if you can recognize quality in a crib mattress then, you will prefer a Colgate mattress.

While you learn about and shop for a crib mattress keep this in mind – the three most important features of any type of crib mattress, in order of most important feature first are: support (the greater the firmness, the better), comfort (this means cushioning without taking away from firmness), and convenience (and preference for the parents).

Mommy Katie’s Review of EcoCover Crib Mattress Cover

Mommy Katie has a nice review up of our crib mattress pad on her preparing for baby guide:

With my son, I learned that diapers do not always last as long as you might intend them to. I hated getting him from his crib to find that he soaked through his diaper and got his sheets and bedding completely wet, not to mention that he would be soaking wet too. My daughter was not the same, it was rare that she would leak out of her diapers, so when my son became notorious for leaky messes I learned that having a pad cover on the mattress was essential. That being said, this time around I will be prepared. Recently I was sent the perfect mattress pad that is exactly what we will be needing for the new baby! I was sent a Organic Cotton EcoCover Crib Mattress Cover from Colgate Kids! I love that this is a organic mattress cover which is great for using for a new baby.

She is also having a giveaway of the mattress pad.

Colgate Mattress: The Changing Pad Specialist? Why Yes!

We receive a lot of email and calls concerning our changing pads.

Yes, even though we are the crib mattress specialist, we should also be known as the changing pad specialist as well.

Many calls are thanking us for adding another dimension to furniture by converting almost any piece of furniture into a diaper changing station. Most new moms tell us they buy at least two changing pads for different areas of their homes.

Colgate makes many different types of changing pads, 2-sided, 3 sided, Hi-Rise, Eco-friendly, and anti-microbial changing pads.

We do not make a four sided changing pad because Colgate believes one side needs to be open for, let’s just say to try to make the diaper changing experience as fast as possible by allowing for fast access to areas in need of cleaning. As for safety, our changing pads have many added features including firm sides to hold your child in place, a buckle and strap system, and, depending on your purchase, screws or snaps to secure your pad to your furniture.

As for cleaning, the changing pads just need to wipe down with a damp towel. All changing pads also give parents further peace of mind because all of our changing pads are GREENGUARD® certified and our foam is CertiPUR-US® certified.

Please let us know if you have had a “fun” experience during diaper changing time using a Colgate changing pad. New mom Julie B. from Doraville, GA called us last week to thank us and tell a fun filled diaper changing story and how thankful she was for how fast the changing pad was cleaned. If you have a fun diaper changing story, please do not hesitate to contact us or Facebook us to tell the story.

Crib Notes: Educate Yourself Before Buying a Mattress

The juvenile industry calls us “the crib mattress specialist” for a number of reasons including the fact that Colgate is one of the only manufacturers that specializes in making only crib mattresses, pads, and the accessories that fit on them and not other unrelated baby products.

Another reason we are called the “Specialist” is because Colgate is often used for reference when people want to know or write about crib mattresses.  Here is a recent article from Consumer Search which deals with what to look for when buying a crib mattress:

Kind Words from The Daily GoodieBag

From our friends at The Daily GoodieBag:

Some of you may remember an awesome giveaway we did a few months ago, where we gave away an organic crib mattress and several organic mattress covers (thanks to the wonderful people at Colgate Mattress). Within the giveaway post, I wrote about my wonderful experience with one of their crib mattresses – The Organic Eco Classica. I still stand by my statement that it’s an AMAZING crib mattress. My daughter LOVED it! Notice I used the word loved, as in past tense. Oh it’s not that she stopped loving it, it’s that we had a wee bit of an accident. Read the rest of this article >>
