From Our Family To Yours

Over six decades ago Colgate Mattress was born with only a $1,500 loan in a small, 4,000 square foot building with one sewing machine and a couple employees. Today, we’re proudly recognized as a crib mattress leader in innovation and safety by families who are raising their own generations on handcrafted Colgate crib mattresses, as our family has for over 60 years.

This month, we thought we’d share a bit of our heritage and core values with our customers, who we consider family.

America’s Trusted Crib Mattress Specialists for Over 60 years

Colgate Mattress is a third generation, family-owned business with a long heritage of crafting premium crib mattresses. After serving in World War II as an airplane mechanic, founder Sol Wolkin worked at several textile companies and realized there was a lack of quality crib mattresses.

In 1955, Sol and his wife Anne Wolkin opened Colgate Mattress Atlanta Corp. Colgate expanded several times at its original location before relocating to its present 60,000 square foot location in Atlanta’s historic Cabbagetown neighborhood.

Colgate Mattress was built on the values of integrity, loyalty and honesty. Known for personal and professional ethics, Sol and Anne passed these principles onto their three children, Alan, Joan and Richard, their five grandchildren and their four great-grandchildren. Sol was honored by the Georgia House of Representatives for his contributions to the state as a long-time manufacturer and employer.

Today, Colgate continues to embody the spirit and high standards that Wolkin instilled in the business and its employees, some of whom have been with the company for decades.

We Make the Safest Crib Mattress

Our family has always chosen to use non-toxic barrier fabrics instead of harsh fire retardant chemicals. Colgate products not only meet, but exceed federal flammability standards. Each crib mattress is put through a stringent testing program, ensuring a safe night’s sleep for both you and your baby.

Leader in Innovation

Colgate Mattress has a longstanding history of innovation in the crib mattress category. We introduced the industry’s first foam crib mattress made from sustainable plant-based oils and continue to design and manufacture award-winning crib mattresses that are safe, healthy and comfortable for baby.

We are proud to be among the first members of the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA), an organization dedicated to enhancing child product safety. Among many other recognitions, Colgate Mattress was recently named a 2018 JPMA Innovation Award Winner.

Celebrities Choose Colgate

We’ve always said that customers who have an appreciation for craftsmanship and quality can truly appreciate all that goes into our crib mattresses. So who better to prove our point than Martha Stewart whose eye for detail and high standards have made her legendary? Martha Stewart who bought a Colgate mattress for her grandchild and featured the company on her TV show.

We are dedicated to making sure every parent has the ability to buy a safe crib mattress for their baby and offer mattresses in all different price ranges to ensure that every parent can afford a mattress for safe sleeping. It’s no wonder Colgate is so popular, even actress mamas like Christy Carlson Romano and Katrina Law picked a Colgate Mattress for their little ones.

Colgate Gives Back

We are working with First Candle to launch a consumer-facing Instagram campaign called “Flip My Crib” that will kick off on April 12th. During the month-long contest that will conclude on Mother’s Day (of course), new and expectant moms and dads are invited to send in pictures of their nursery and crib illustrating safe sleep guidelines to a win prize bundle and be featured on the First Candle and Colgate Mattress instagram feeds. The contest aims to increase awareness about the vital importance of safe sleep practices.

Colgate has also partnered with Delivering Good to provide Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Irma victims with crib mattresses and pads. Colgate also gives to SIDS research, the Rebecca’s Tent women’s shelter and the Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta. Fostering local, national and international relationships has helped sustain Colgate Mattress, which was among national retailer buybuy Baby’s first vendors.
