We hope that all expecting parents enjoy the excitement and anticipation of welcoming your new little one into the world. We also know that during pregnancy it can be a roller coaster of emotions for Mom and Dad. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the choices to make in a relatively short period of time, but don’t worry, you can do this. As always, don’t hesitate to contact us if you can’t find an answer you’re looking for.

Crib Notes on Crib Mattresses

Here are a few quick tips to remember as you begin your search:

  • Don’t compare the attributes of your adult mattress to your child’s crib mattress. Firmer is better when it comes to babies. Your baby’s soft bones and muscles need more support than an adult’s.
  • All materials that come in contact with your baby’s skin should be safe. Look for GREENGUARD Gold and CertiPUR-US seals of approval.
  • There are three types of crib mattresses: foam, innerspring and organic. All three are good options.
  • When choosing a foam mattress, the firmer and heavier the foam, the better.
  • When choosing an innerspring mattress, the thickness of the coils is more important than the number of coils. And choose one with border rods for edge support

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s only natural for expecting parents to have questions. Lots and lots of questions. But don’t worry, we welcome them. Here you’ll find a pretty comprehensive list of questions we’ve answered over the years. If you don’t find the answer you’re looking for, simply contact us and we promise to get back to you quickly with an answer.

Glossary of Terms

After 60 years in the industry we know this business forwards and backwards and all the terminology around baby products. We recognize however, that expecting parents do not, so the last thing we want to create is any confusion over certain terms or language we use on the site. This easy-to-use glossary can explain many of the terms used in our industry. Remember, if there is anything that you don’t understand or you just need some clarification, or even a copy of great aunt Sally’s famous banana bread recipe, we’re here to help so don’t hesitate to contact us.

Foam Vs. Innerspring

One of the most frequently asked questions we get from parents is, “Which is better, a foam or an innerspring crib mattress?” The answer is both. The classic innerspring design is the one most adults still sleep on and are most familiar with but as Dylan said, “The times are a-changin.” With new innovations in foam that deliver the firm support babies need and are more breathable and eco-friendly, many adults and babies prefer foam. Foam is also much lighter in weight than an innerspring unit which makes for easy sheet changes lifting the mattress out of the crib. But high-quality innerspring units are durable and provide an amazing night’s sleep.

The Truth about Organic

We’ve been big advocates of an industry-wide standard for using the terms Eco-friendly, Organic, Environmentally-Friendly or simply Green to describe baby products. To date there is still none so expecting parents need to do their homework on claims many companies out there make concerning what is and what is not organic. There are no shortage of shysters who make unsubstantiated or exaggerated claims concerning the eco-friendliness of their products simple to justify a higher price. At Colgate we hold ourselves to a higher standard than our industry and we choose to do business with transparency when it comes to our customers.

Product Registration

We encourage you to register your Colgate product in the unlikely event that there is ever a safety recall. We respect your privacy and want to make sure that should the need ever to arise where we needed to provide you information concerning the safety of your child, this is how we would do that. It also helps us have your purchase on file if you ever have questions about our limited lifetime warranty.

Safety Surrogates

Nothing is more important to the Colgate family than the safety and wellbeing of your child. For over half a century it’s been our calling to help ensure that babies are provided the right environment to grow and develope into happy, healthy children. Luckily we’re not alone in our mission to care for babies everywhere. Here is a list of some amazing organizations dedicated to keeping parents informed and educated on safety issues that relate to pregnancy, infancy and those wonderful early childhood years.

Blog

We see our blog as an opportunity to engage parents in conversation. We will laugh together, we may cry together and we will most certainly learn from one another about this crazy ride called Parenthood. What we don’t want to do is shove a bunch of self-serving retail pitches down your throat. Do we love our prodcts and think they are the best things since sliced bread? Well, of course. But we also know how appreciative each of our families were during pregnancy when we could have real conversations with other parents and benefit from each other’s knowledge and life experience. Give it a read and we think you’ll come back for more.
