Foam vs. Innerspring Crib Mattresses

One of the first questions expecting parents often ask is, “What’s the difference between a foam mattress and an innerspring mattress?” Thanks to scientific advances in the making of foam, the quality of foam mattreses has drastically improved. Foams made from plant-based oils have replaced those from petroleum-based oils. A big advantage of foam mattresses is their lightweight design, which makes for easier sheet changes.

The innerspring mattress design is the industry standard and still a great option. A high-quality innerspring mattress typically weighs 30+ pounds due to the thicker gauge coils and extra padding. Many parents still prefer innerspring because it’s the design they sleep on. In the end, it comes down to personal preference and there’s no wrong decision. Our rule of thumb for expecting parents is to buy the highest quality mattress that fits within your budget.
