How to Choose the Best Crib Mattress

happy baby on mattress

A quality crib mattress not only makes bedtime something to look forward to, but it also acts as your little one’s growth center and ensures safety while sleeping.

Colgate Mattress has been family-owned and operated for over 60 years and knows that selecting your baby’s first mattress can be an overwhelming task. That’s why we pride ourselves on helping you understand the differences between mattresses and what features are most important. Take a look at these quick tips as you begin to determine how to choose a crib mattress that is just right for your little one.

Look for a Firm Mattress

Whether you’re searching for a foam or innerspring mattress, look for firmness. For both types of mattresses, the general rule is: the firmer, the better. Newborns develop rapidly over the first two years, which is why you need to find a mattress designed specifically to cater to an infant’s growth. A firm and flat mattress base provides the resistance necessary for developing and strengthening muscles as an infant begins to push up, turn and eventually stand in the crib.

You Can’t Tell a Mattress by its Cover

With a mattress, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Understanding the different components inside the mattress is essential for your baby’s safety and comfort. For instance, are there any cushioning layers? What materials are used? Is there a flammability barrier? Is there waterproof backing? There’s much more to a mattress than just a cute cover. Consider an all-natural option, like the Colgate Natural I, created for the parent wanting a mattress for their baby that is made with 100% natural components for the healthiest and most comfortable sleep environment possible.

Examine the Labels

One place to start? The label. Manufacturers are required by law to reveal what a mattress is made of. Don’t buy a mattress from a manufacturer or retailer that doesn’t tell you this information through the label, in-store displays, or online specifications. In fact, you should be able to find out the components of each individual layer, from cover to cover. Colgate products not only meet, but exceed federal flammability standards.

Buy New

If possible, buy a new crib mattress. Not only does it ensure the mattress is sanitary, but you also won’t have to worry about how it was previously used or stared. One exception to the rule: if you a buy a new mattress for your first child, keep it clean, and store it in a dry environment (consider Colgate’s storage bag), then you can use it for your next child.

From Our Family To Yours

Over six decades ago Colgate Mattress was born with only a $1,500 loan in a small, 4,000 square foot building with one sewing machine and a couple employees. Today, we’re proudly recognized as a crib mattress leader in innovation and safety by families who are raising their own generations on handcrafted Colgate crib mattresses, as our family has for over 60 years.

This month, we thought we’d share a bit of our heritage and core values with our customers, who we consider family.

America’s Trusted Crib Mattress Specialists for Over 60 years

Colgate Mattress is a third generation, family-owned business with a long heritage of crafting premium crib mattresses. After serving in World War II as an airplane mechanic, founder Sol Wolkin worked at several textile companies and realized there was a lack of quality crib mattresses.

In 1955, Sol and his wife Anne Wolkin opened Colgate Mattress Atlanta Corp. Colgate expanded several times at its original location before relocating to its present 60,000 square foot location in Atlanta’s historic Cabbagetown neighborhood.

Colgate Mattress was built on the values of integrity, loyalty and honesty. Known for personal and professional ethics, Sol and Anne passed these principles onto their three children, Alan, Joan and Richard, their five grandchildren and their four great-grandchildren. Sol was honored by the Georgia House of Representatives for his contributions to the state as a long-time manufacturer and employer.

Today, Colgate continues to embody the spirit and high standards that Wolkin instilled in the business and its employees, some of whom have been with the company for decades.

We Make the Safest Crib Mattress

Our family has always chosen to use non-toxic barrier fabrics instead of harsh fire retardant chemicals. Colgate products not only meet, but exceed federal flammability standards. Each crib mattress is put through a stringent testing program, ensuring a safe night’s sleep for both you and your baby.

Leader in Innovation

Colgate Mattress has a longstanding history of innovation in the crib mattress category. We introduced the industry’s first foam crib mattress made from sustainable plant-based oils and continue to design and manufacture award-winning crib mattresses that are safe, healthy and comfortable for baby.

We are proud to be among the first members of the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA), an organization dedicated to enhancing child product safety. Among many other recognitions, Colgate Mattress was recently named a 2018 JPMA Innovation Award Winner.

Celebrities Choose Colgate

We’ve always said that customers who have an appreciation for craftsmanship and quality can truly appreciate all that goes into our crib mattresses. So who better to prove our point than Martha Stewart whose eye for detail and high standards have made her legendary? Martha Stewart who bought a Colgate mattress for her grandchild and featured the company on her TV show.

We are dedicated to making sure every parent has the ability to buy a safe crib mattress for their baby and offer mattresses in all different price ranges to ensure that every parent can afford a mattress for safe sleeping. It’s no wonder Colgate is so popular, even actress mamas like Christy Carlson Romano and Katrina Law picked a Colgate Mattress for their little ones.

Colgate Gives Back

We are working with First Candle to launch a consumer-facing Instagram campaign called “Flip My Crib” that will kick off on April 12th. During the month-long contest that will conclude on Mother’s Day (of course), new and expectant moms and dads are invited to send in pictures of their nursery and crib illustrating safe sleep guidelines to a win prize bundle and be featured on the First Candle and Colgate Mattress instagram feeds. The contest aims to increase awareness about the vital importance of safe sleep practices.

Colgate has also partnered with Delivering Good to provide Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Irma victims with crib mattresses and pads. Colgate also gives to SIDS research, the Rebecca’s Tent women’s shelter and the Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta. Fostering local, national and international relationships has helped sustain Colgate Mattress, which was among national retailer buybuy Baby’s first vendors.

Colgate Named Best of Year 2018 Award Winner by USA TODAY NETWORK

Colgate Mattress has been announced the official recipient of the Best of Year 2018 Award by Reviewed.com, a part of USA TODAY Tech – the most comprehensive source for unbiased, trustworthy and lab-tested reviews! Reviewed.com editors named the Colgate Eco Classica III “Best Crib Mattress” in the Parenting Products category.

Since 1955, Colgate has worked tirelessly to earn the trust of parents and along the way we’ve been recognized by industry groups and consumer product organizations for producing the highest quality crib mattresses available. While the health and safety of your baby is our primary focus, we are honored by these recognitions.

The Colgate Eco Classica III will be prominently featured on Reviewed.com, USATODAY.com, and the entire USA TODAY Network throughout the holiday shopping season. You can read Reviewed.com’s full review below.

Amongst all the crib mattresses we tested, the Colgate Eco Classica III performed the best. It is both CertiPUR-US and Greenguard Gold certified, which means it comes out of the package with very little smell, and the smell it does have is somewhat earthy and not unpleasant. These certifications also mean, of course, that the mattress is considered to emit very low levels (if any) of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). That’s a plus because nobody wants their baby breathing in that business all night.

The Eco Classica III is also a dual-sided mattress, so it’s a good combination of safety and comfort from birth through toddlerhood. The infant side is firm without feeling too hard for comfort, while the toddler side has just enough give without being too soft. The edges are squared instead of rounded, which makes for a secure crib fit. While it may protect the mattress itself from liquids, the cover soaks them up and stained terribly in our tests. The fact that you can’t remove and wash the cover feels like a glaring design flaw, but top it with a mattress protector, and it’s a great mattress.

What do you do when you are done with your Crib Mattress?

What can you do when you are done with your crib mattress?

We get calls regularly from customers asking where to recycle a used crib mattress.

Currently recycling facilities do not accept crib mattresses, but we have colgate stores bannera few suggestions below on how you can donate, reuse or repurpose your crib mattress.

1. Donate your used crib mattress to a shelter. Contact a local shelter to determine if they are accepting baby crib mattress donations. Colgate supports many women’s shelters with generous donations of crib mattresses to make sure that all babies have a safe place to sleep. If you know a shelter that needs baby mattresses, please send us their information.

2. Donate your crib mattress to local furniture banks where people in need can gather good, used products for their home. Colgate can help to direct you to your local furniture bank. Some cities have them, some do not have furniture banks.

3. Sell the crib mattress components to a recycler. You can actually sell the steel from Colgate innerspring mattresses to a local recycler. Colgate uses top quality American steel for the innerspring portion of the crib mattress.

4. Reuse the Coir Fiber in your garden, underneath your pet’s doghouse, as a welcome mat (good conversation starter) or even under your car to keep your garage dry!

5. Repurpose the cover as a weed protector in your garden or under the arts and crafts table to keep floor clean.

6. Repurpose the crib mattress as a backstop for sports (great for preventing baseballs from dinging your house or bruised noses from run-ins with basketball poles) .

7. Reuse the crib mattress as a doggie bed with your dog’s favorite blanket. Great option for getting Fido out of your bed or off the couch!

8. Store your crib mattress in your storm shelter or basement to use as head coverage if you live in a tornado prone area. CDC (The Center for Disease Control) recommends protecting your head during a tornado with household objects such as mattresses and blankets (http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/tornadoes/during.asp)

A Word from Colgate Mattress on Crib Mattress Donations

Colgate takes pride in the products we manufacture. Once your children have outgrown their baby mattress consider donating, reusing, or repurposing instead of sending it to a landfill. Colgate encourages donations to your local womens shelter or furniture bank. Donating your crib mattress is acceptable everywhere. The best way to protect the environment is to use a product more than once in its lifetime; set a great example for your children!
